Going all-in on AWS is a recipe for success

Gousto believes going all-in on AWS is a recipe for success, diginomica writes, and it’s undeniable there is no way around public cloud for digital services & offerings. It’s a pretty steep thesis to build a strategy relying on one particular hyper-scaler to make a business a success. In the end, customers purchase experience and not technology.

There are multiple components to this experience and cloud infrastructure is only a piece to it. Choosing the right infrastructure to build this experience is a topic on it’s own and can decide over success vs. failure, doing the technology right alone is no recipe for success either.

In the Gousto case, content is a central component. In Goustos model, customers expect new and surprising recipes. Netflix, to make a comparison, was well known for presenting the most relevant content to their customers and retaining the audience. Recently, Netflix is struggling to engage their viewer base and are experimenting with random shuffle options, very detached from prediction and recommendation algorithms.

The customer engagement problem cannot be solved by any cloud infrastructure, but requires a good understanding of customer expectations. The cloud will only interpret what you give it to chew on. Choosing the right sources will have more impact on whether a business will become and stay a success.
